Top Tips for Retaining Top Talent

When you have advertised a position in your business for people to apply to and work with you, you need to be able to identify who the best employees are in the business so that you could have them come aboard. Everybody wants top talent, so it stands to reason that you would also want the same.

You might consider the fact that the people you hire are going to be the next best thing in your business. But the only way that that’s going to happen is if you ensure that you have a strategy in place to keep them once you catch them.

You might reel in a fish and throw it back into the ocean. If that fish is going to make your business bigger success, you would want to keep hold of it for as long as possible! People are not fish however, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t look at how you can retain top employees.

Throughout the pandemic, employees were able to gain an ERC tax credit if they retained their staff throughout the two years. This was there as a congratulatory gift so that employers had a reason to continue their retention strategies.  If you have people in your business who are making a big difference to the way things are run, then you should do all you can to not let them go. So, with this in mind, we’ve got some tips to help you to retain your top talent going forward.

  • Look at reskilling and upskilling as much as possible. Employee development and their education go hand in hand, and you have to ensure that you are keeping up with your employees reskilling and upskilling where possible. Make sure that you have education strategies and training options for your team, and you will always have an engaged workforce. When you upskill, you provide people with the tools that they need to further their careers. It’s not always going to be with your business, but you are going to find them happier than ever to work with you alongside you. Providing your employees the opportunity to learn and grow makes them and you better people.
  • Offer awards. Recognition is so important when it comes to your attention strategy. Not only must you recognise effort, you must reward it where you can. People working for your business need to feel as if they are succeeding somewhere, so make note of all of the ways that they would like to be treated and implement them in your office. It’s not just about dressing down on Fridays, because that doesn’t pay the bills! Keeping people engaged means not treating them like they’re still at school. Ask your team what it means to them to be rewarded and what they consider to be a reward and you’ll be able to build a retention strategy around that that makes more sense.
  • Always keep an open door policy. A good way to attract and retain your employees is to keep the door open on communication. You need to ensure that they feel that they can come to you and ask questions no matter the time of day, as it will help you to find the loopholes in any current policies and procedures if you know what’s happening on the floor. Open door policies make people feel comfortable, because there’s nothing worse than watching management teams have meetings behind closed doors that feel secretive. An open door policy from you fosters the same culture for them, and that could make a difference to how people feel about your business.
  • Praise people publicly and privately. If you have promoted somebody on your team and you have given them that golden handshake behind closed doors, making an announcement to the rest of the team. It should be celebrated if you are offering opportunities to promote from within, and everybody should get to know exactly what that means for them. It may be something new for your business, but the people who work with you and for you will appreciate the fact that you are open enough to let everybody know and openly be congratulatory. Positive reviews of performance should always be done when there is an audience present so that people feel good about themselves. Employees who feel good about themselves are employees who are loyal.

Don’t forget; employee happiness determines your success as a business now and in the future. Do it well now and you will have a strong team for a good long time.
