Starting an online store can be an exciting and eye-opening experience. You will learn loads about marketing and sales, and may even get the chance to dip your toes into fields like graphic design and web development.

Before you can start to sell your products, though, you will need to give them a price. Figuring out how much your products are worth can be a complicated process, making it well worth spending the time to get this right before you start selling.

To help you out with this, this article will be exploring some of the key elements that will go into deciding the price that you charge for the products on your online store.

Product/Manufacturing Costs

Whether you make your own products or sell someone else’s, you will almost certainly have to spend some money on this process.

This should always be less than you charge for the goods, ensuring that you are able to make a profit, but this can be a challenge for some businesses. Buying in bulk can be a good way to reduce the cost of products, giving you a larger margin that will make it easier to make a profit.

Manufacturing can make it harder to charge a reasonable price, especially when you are a new business. Big companies are able to make this work by using overseas factories, in-house machinery, and a range of other tools that make it possible for them to squeeze the price of the items they make.

You have to be extremely careful if you are manufacturing something yourself, working very hard to make it as cheap as possible.

Packaging & Shipping

It’s becoming increasingly common for online stores to include shipping fees in their prices. While this can raise your prices a little, it can be a good way to ensure that customers aren’t surprised when they reach the checkout.

Alongside the cost of shipping, it can also be worth factoring in the price of the packaging you will be using for this. You won’t directly charge your customer for this, though you should always make sure that your prices cover it to avoid losing money.

Competition

Even if you are starting a very niche business, it’s likely that you will have some sort of competition out there.

Having the lowest price for a product can be a great way to attract more customers, but this means that you have to know which products are cheaper than yours.

You can find price tracking tools across the web that can help you with this, providing you with the power to make sure that you’re always selling your products at the best rates.

Of course, this can be very difficult if you are competing with larger companies that can afford to sell their products cheaply. It’s never worth losing money to make sure that you are the cheapest, and it can often be worth looking at other ways to stand out if you can’t make your goods any cheaper.

Offering excellent customer service and support can be a good way to make yourself stand out when your prices are high.

Future Sales/Discounts

Online sellers often neglect the idea of planning for future sales and discounts on their stores. If you want to be able to take part in events like Black Friday, though, you will need to put some time and effort into figuring out the best prices for your products in normal times.

These sorts of events can prove to be incredibly good earners, making it a good idea to weigh this up with the money you might lose if you charge higher prices throughout the rest of the year.

What Are They Worth?

Finally, as the last idea to consider, it’s time to think about what your products are actually worth. This can be hard to determine, making it a good idea to look inwardly to figure out how much you would be happy to pay for the item you’re selling.

This can be tricky, with many people underselling themselves when they are working to figure out how much their products should cost. As time goes on, you will be able to develop a better understanding of this side of your business, but it could take some time before you feel confident to label your products at the right price.
