When it comes to their choice of careers and how closely they relate to their passion, people can be all too pessimistic. Think of your passion and think about whether there are people who do, in fact, do it as a job. If the answer is yes, then there is a way to turn your passion into a career, you just need to outline the steps in how to do it.
Research careers in that field
One of the problems with working with one’s passion is that people treat it like a “dream career” so they have an idea of it that is idealized and nebulous, meaning that it’s not very likely to be realistic. To that end, you should take time to research your career to get an idea of what it really entails. This includes getting an idea of that day-to-day, what your job roles and responsibilities might be, as well as the benefits and problems within the industry that you might have to deal with. Some of the information you get might be a little disheartening, but that doesn’t make it any less worth pursuing that career.
Figure out what qualifications you need
Once you have an idea of what a career using your passion is going to look like, then you need to go through the steps of making sure that you’re well suited to the job. To use fitness as an example, you might already have a great working knowledge of what it takes to change your diet, make fitness a hobby, and build the discipline needed for a lifestyle change. However, you’re not likely to be able to work with gyms or clients until you get the certification you need, such as your yoga fundamentals. Get an idea of what qualifications you might need and start studying ahead of time so that you have a good idea of the timeline until you’re able to start working.
Work on it even if it isn’t your job
“Fake it until you make it” is a more viable strategy than you might think. Even if you haven’t gotten yourself into the passion-fuelled career that you’re aiming at just yet, you can make use of what platform you can find to align yourself better with that future career. For instance, you might want to start writing a blog, creating content that can help you begin to build the reputation for having an idea of what you’re talking about, even if you’re not professionally involved in that field. Of course, it’s a good idea to have the aforementioned training and qualifications that can help you back up what you say and add a bit of authority to the brand that you create.
It is true that not everyone will be able to make it in a career that matches their passion, and sometimes you have to find that passion in your career. However, you will never know until you try and you’re much likelier to regret missing the opportunity than just not getting it when you tried.
