Obvious Security Mistakes That You Need To Stop Making

One of the toughest things about running any business, no matter what industry you’re in, is the fact that there are just so many different things that you need to consider. It can often feel as though you’re spinning places just trying to keep everything together. Sadly, this can often result in certain aspects of your business getting less attention than others and even being neglected entirely. Sure, some of these things might not be the most important or relevant parts of your business, but there’s one thing that is far too often ignored despite being one of the most important parts of any business: security. No matter how much work you put into your business and how much success you experience, none of it is going to be worth anything if you’re unable to protect your business from outside threats. One of the main reasons that a lot of businesses end up leaving themselves vulnerable is that they make simple, obvious mistakes simply because they’re not thinking properly about the importance of security. In order to prevent that from happening to you, here are four obvious security mistakes that you need to stop making right now.

Forgetting digital security

When a lot of people think about security, they tend to think about padlocks on doors, cameras, and alarm systems. Certainly, there’s no doubt that these things are incredibly important, but that doesn’t mean they’re the only things that you should be putting your time and effort into. So much modern business is conducted online these days that lackluster digital security can put your business in an incredibly vulnerable position. Make sure that all of your system’s firewall and antivirus software is fully updated. Cybercriminals work tirelessly to get past your security software so keeping it updated is one of the very best things that you can do to keep them out.

Ignoring your customers

It’s a mistake to assume that security only works one way in your company. The truth is that your customers rely on your business to protect them and their information. Because of this, you need to think carefully about what you’re doing to keep your customers’ information safe and secure. This is where services like Netverify can be incredibly useful. Netverify’s technology allows you to verify the name, date of birth, address and ssn of your customers so that you’re always sure who it is that you’re dealing with. Not only does this reduce the risk of fraud that can potentially harm your business, but it also protects your customers from that risk as well.

Ignoring personal responsibility

Don’t assume that having the right technology or services in place is going to automatically make your business entirely safe and secure. The truth is that if you’re not careful, things can still slip through the cracks. This is why you need to be fully aware of the importance of personal responsibility. It is the responsibility of everyone in your business, yourself included, to make sure that all information is secure. This means that you need to have secure passwords, you need to make sure that no valuable information is left lying around, and to essentially just create as strong a culture of security in your business as possible.

Not vetting employees

It’s in most business owner’s nature to want to trust their employees, and most of the time that trust is rewarded. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a very small chance that an employee could be acting against the interests of the business. When this does happen, it can be truly disastrous, so the way to deal with it is to avoid it at all costs. This means that you’ve got to vet all potential employees very carefully. Make sure that you’re always following up on references and try to be sure that anyone you’re bringing in has values that fit with your business as a whole.

One of the main reasons why so many businesses end up making these kinds of mistakes is that they often feel so unnecessary. After all, in an ideal world, you would never really need to have security measures in place at all, or at least if you did they would be so effective that you could easily forget about them. However, the reality is that we don’t live in an ideal world and there are always people out there who are willing to go outside of the law in order to get what they want. And these people often work incredibly hard to try and get past your businesses security measures. Because of this you simply cannot afford to ignore them, and you should always make sure to keep things up-to-date and fully functioning at all times.
