Employee Safety

Working in the mining industry can be hazardous there’s no doubt about that. If you own a mining company you need to take precautions to ensure that your workers are safe. The safety of your employees is critical not just to their wellbeing but to the growth of your business as well.

Every year there are reports that miners are killed and many of these deaths could have been avoided if safety precautions had been observed. If you own a mining company or thinking about becoming a miner, here are some safety regulations you should always bear in mind.

Be Aware

There are obvious dangers that come with working in a mine. One of the most important things employees need to know is that working in a mine is hazardous, there’s no going around that.

Once workers acknowledge that mining is inherently hazardous they will be more likely to stay alert while they are on the job. Accidents can occur in a split second of carelessness.

Communication Is Key

Your employees should be aware that their communication with each other is key to ensuring their safety. Extra money and extra time should always be freely given in order to ensure that safety equipment is up to industry standards.

Before any task is undertaken the possibility of an accident should be considered and precaution should be taken to mitigate this as much as possible.

Do Refresher Safety Courses

Regular safety training is a must for new employees. However, it is not just new employees that should undergo regular training, even seasoned employees should be part of training sessions as well.

Your safety and training sessions should carry a theory and practical component in order for them to be effective.  It is important that you assess an employee’s fitness level before assigning them, certain tasks. This is because liability is possible especially if a worker complains about a task and they’re still forced to do them.

If you are a mining worker it is important for you to know your rights. Once you are injured your mining accident injury lawyeers will inform you of your legal rights to compensation. If you are an employer your aim is always to ensure that you always provide excellent standards of safety for your workers to avoid being sued.

Provide Safety Equipment

The onus is on you as an employer to ensure that your employees have the right safety equipment to carry out their job at all times. This means that you should provide helmets, safety glasses, and gloves to name a few.

You need to ensure that you constantly reiterate how important it is for workers to wear their safety equipment. There should be a zero-tolerance policy for workers who disobey the rules.

Document Everything

One of the major things that you need to do as an employee in the mining industry is to document your safety procedures and regulations. Make sure that all your employees are given a handbook of these safety precautions as soon as you employ them.

Ensure that they sign and acknowledge that they have received this document. This will help to protect you from liability.
